UMPZERO® lifts production restrictions
A state-owned hydropower giant was experiencing continuous issues with abnormal heat development in a 36-poles, 201 MVA generator erected in the late ‘70s. Despite repetitive efforts to rectify the problem with mechanical means, the issues remained with development of hot spots in certain areas.
Due to the hot spots the machine had to be put under operational restrictions, reducing the maximum output by 20 MVA for the unit to function properly. It became imminent to do something about the situation and the hydropower company started searching for other solutions.
Upon the request to investigate the case, Magstrom decided to use Finite Element Modelling to gain a full understanding of the electromagnetic health. Substantial rotor and stator eccentricities could be concluded. A snapshot of the electromagnetic losses around the circumference of the unit further showed that the losses coincide with the location of the hotspots.
When adding Magstrom UMPZERO® to the equation we obtained:
- The total force between rotor and stator was reduced by a factor 10
- The oscillating, fatigue-causing force acting on rotor components was completely cancelled
- The losses in the damper bars were reduced by a factor 10
- Last but not least, the overall loss distribution was leveled out, allowing lifting the operation restrictions previously imposed due to the heat development
